Unfollower apps vs reading your own Instagram export
A no-bash comparison. Login-based unfollower apps vs using Meta's official export + LMKFR. Privacy, accuracy, tradeoffs, and what's actually honest.
Login-based unfollower apps require your credentials or broad account access. Reading your own Instagram export from Meta's "Download Your Information" tool requires no login to third-party apps, keeps data on your device, and answers the same question honestly. The tradeoff: you need to request an export and compare over time.

Honest comparison
| Factor | Unfollower apps (login-based) | Instagram export + LMKFR (local-first) |
|---|---|---|
| **Login required** | Yes - often need Instagram login or connect account | No - use Meta's official export download. No third-party login. |
| **Data access** | Broad permissions, app accesses your account via API/tokens | You download your own data from Meta. You control the files. |
| **Where data goes** | Often processed on their servers | In local mode, nothing leaves your device. Analysis runs in your browser. |
| **Tracking over time** | Can track continuously if connected | You choose when to take snapshots (export when you want). |
| **Works if logged out/concerned** | No | Yes |
| **Cost** | Many are "free" with ads/upsells; privacy cost isn't always obvious | Free to use locally. You already have the data from Meta. |
| **Accuracy of "unfollow" events** | Depends on their tracking | Based on official export state at each snapshot. |
| **Motive/reason** | Rarely told, often guessed | Never told - and the diff doesn't pretend to know (see [Why unfollows sting](/blog/why-unfollows-sting-three-way-diff)) |
FAQ
Do I need to log in to see unfollows with LMKFR?
No. You download your export from Meta's official tool and load it in your browser. LMKFR runs locally - no Instagram login required.
Is it safe to use an unfollower app?
It depends on the app. The main tradeoff is handing over credentials/tokens and trusting their privacy policy. If privacy matters, reading your own export avoids that entirely.
Can I see unfollows from a single export?
Not reliably. You need two exports from different times to see who changed. A single snapshot shows followers/following now, not who left between dates.
Does the export show when someone unfollowed?
Usually no explicit "unfollow event" timestamp. The diff between snapshots is what reveals the change.
Recommendation
If you want the lowest-privacy-footprint way to check unfollows, use Meta's official export + LMKFR. If you want continuous tracking and don't mind connecting your account, login-based apps can do that - but understand the tradeoffs.
We'd rather you have the information without giving up access to your account. Read more in Why your export is the only honest way to check unfollows without handing over credentials.
Try it: Open LMKFR and load your export. See Find who unfollowed you from your Instagram data export for step by step.
